FundingFactory Act of Green for Earth Day 2012

FundingFactory participants send thousands of empty inkjet and toner cartridges, used cell phones, and retried personal electronics to our recycling center each month. In honor of Earth Day (celebrated April 22), we will count each item we receive as an Act of Green on behalf of our participants. For every 100 item received, we’ll plant one tree with CarbonFund.org.

Mobilize the Earth
We’re pledging with the Earth Day Network for each recyclable we receive in April to demonstrate our commitment to keeping e-waste out of landfills. We’re helping the Earth Day Network mobilize the Earth to pledge 1 Billion Acts of Green this month. Earth Day Network is a global leader in promoting environmental education and green schools – check out their 2012 video below!

When just one toner cartridge is reprocessed, we avert 2.5 pounds of solid, non biodegradable waste from being deposited into landfills.

E-Waste recycling makes a difference
Recycling just one cartridge or cell phone can have an impact. When just one toner cartridge is reprocessed, we avert 2.5 pounds of solid waste from being deposited into landfills. Every recycled printer cartridge prevents nonrenewable resources, such as oil, from being used to product a new one.

By remanufacturing one cell phone, we thwart the gold-mining process necessary to build a  new circuit board and thereby stop 220 pounds of waste from being generated. (Read more here and here.)

100 Recyclable Items = 1 Tree
FundingFactory schools, churches, charities and groups are not the only ones making many acts of green. Every inkjet cartridge, laser cartridge, and cell phone – both qualifying and non-qualifying – sent into FundingFactory in the month of April will count as an Act of Green. For every 100 items received, FundingFactory will plant one tree with CarbonFund.org as part of their Million Tree Challenge.

Deforestation is responsible for about 20% of global warming. Reforestation is a critical part of the solution. Planting trees:

  • Absorbs carbon dioxide to reduce climate change
  • Improves air quality
  • Preserves biodiversity
  • Controls flooding by minimizing runoff and topsoil loss
  • Provides habitat and nutrition for wildlife
  • Creates jobs managing tree nurseries, planting and care

We will be posting the final tally of items received in early May, as well as how many trees will be planted on behalf of schools and nonprofits that recycle with FundingFactory. Check back soon!
